LIMPOPO – Two suspects were arrested on Wednesday night, 16 January and stolen cash recovered during an operation by Limpopo Police at different identified sites following information received of a substantial amount of money that went missing from a cash-in-transit company in Louis Trichardt.
According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the first suspect was arrested in Ravele Riverside under the Tshilwavhisikhu policing area and his accomplice was later arrested in Elim in the Watervaal policing precinct.
“The operation, which commenced yesterday afternoon, proceeded through the night till this morning and was characterized by relentless searches, probing and digging by members at three different premises and produced positive results when bank notes were recovered buried in yard. Some of the cash was found stashed in ice cream containers and refuse bags,” Mojapelo explained.
The suspects, who are employed by the CIT company were responsible for collecting cash from various locations and instead of depositing the money, they took it. One of the suspects had already bought a double cab vehicle and it was also confiscated by police.
The total cash recovered amounted to R2.6 million.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba was also present during this operation and commended members on conducting a well coordinated operation that led to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the stolen cash.
The suspects will appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrates Court, soon, on a charge of theft.
