Polokwane fashion designer launches raffle to save friend’s life

Fashion designer Nico Willoughby-Smith is raffling a R10 000 custom garment voucher to help cover dialysis costs for a friend with kidney disease.

POLOKWANE – After four years in Johannesburg, fashion designer Nico Willoughby-Smith returned to Polokwane earlier this year. Within weeks of his homecoming, he launched a campaign that could save a life.

The Fashion/Beauty for Life campaign is a raffle in aid of Marietjie (Maraai) Wolmarans (58), who has stage five chronic kidney disease and only 6% kidney function remaining. The funds raised will go toward her monthly dialysis treatments.

Why Maraai’s story moved him

“I have known Maraai and her family for 13 years,” Nico said. “Since being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2023, I understand the trauma that comes with a life-threatening illness.”

Now in remission, he said Maraai’s diagnosis in 2025 inspired him to act.

“I have never met such an inspiring family. They have fought tooth and nail to support the monthly dialysis treatments.”

Using his craft to make a difference

Unable to offer financial assistance himself, Nico decided to contribute through his profession.

“I know my hands are blessed to bless others. I wanted to launch a campaign that could cast a wider net and spark community support.”

The cost of staying alive

Maraai requires at least two dialysis treatments a week at a cost of R20,879 per month. A kidney transplant is not currently an option due to financial constraints.

After her diagnosis, she underwent emergency dialysis at Pietersburg Provincial Hospital through a temporary line inserted in her neck.

She was discharged after two weeks and referred for ongoing treatment at a private facility.

In addition to dialysis, Maraai faces monthly blood tests, medication costs and other health complications.

What the raffle winner gets

Tickets cost R200 each, with the draw taking place on August 30. The winner will receive a R10 000 voucher (valid until August 30, 2027, non-redeemable for cash).

The prize can be used toward:

  • A custom-designed bridal gown
  • A matric farewell outfit
  • A bespoke three-piece suit

It covers consultations, fittings, materials, pattern design, labour and construction costs. The voucher may also be used for bridal party attire, including bridesmaid dresses, flower girl dresses, groomsmen suits, page boys and family members.

“The Fashion/Beauty for Life campaign could save a life and change the life of someone who needs it,” Nico said.

Maretha Swanepoel

My name is Maretha Swanepoel and I have worked at the Polokwane Review since 2012. The decision to become a journalist came at 04:00 one Friday morning while watching news of bombings in Afghanistan and I realised I wanted to be there. Some years later, I decided to rather stay in South Africa and join the industry due to my love for writing and curiosity. Even though I can write all beats, I love human interest and community news with some schools added to the mix. Telling someone’s story and using my camera to make memories is a privilege. My interests include animals (especially dogs) and mental health. I like to spend my time with my dogs and a good book. My family is important and takes second place in my heart. God is always first.
