Mashashane crash death toll rises to 4, 51 injured
The death toll from the Mashashane learner transport crash has risen to four after a third learner died in hospital, while 51 others were injured.
LIMPOPO – Four people, including three female learners, have died following a serious collision involving two vehicles transporting learners in the Mashashane area.
Initial reports indicated that two female learners and one driver had died at the scene. A third female learner, who sustained serious injuries in the crash, later died while being transported to Polokwane for medical treatment.
51 learners injured
A total of 51 learners were injured in the collision and taken to Polokwane Provincial Hospital and Mediclinic Polokwane for treatment.
The crash occurred on the road between Jupiter and Diana in Mashashane. Emergency services, including Polokwane Municipality Fire and Rescue Services, traffic officers and health personnel, responded to the scene.
Road reopened
The road was temporarily closed while emergency crews attended to the crash and has since been cleared and reopened to traffic.
Cause under investigation
The cause of the collision remains under investigation, with reckless and negligent driving among the factors being considered.
