Bucan: 50 years of stationery excellence

Bucan: 50 years of stationery excellence

Fifty years ago in 1975, a small but determined team, one of whom was well-known businessman Tony Fasano, opened the doors of Bucan Office Equipment (Pty) Ltd at 42 Schoeman Street in Polokwane, directly across from the Receiver of Revenue’s premises. What began as a modest venture with a capital investment of just R4 000 and a team of five (three salesmen, one office assistant and one storekeeper) has since grown into one of Limpopo’s most respected and trusted business institutions.

In those early days, Bucan proudly represented Olivetti S.p.A., distributing adding-machines, manual and electric typewriters, and later, electronic calculators, and photocopiers. The salesmen not only sold equipment but also personally delivered machines, paper, ribbons, and rolls, and even collected payments by hand.

It was an era defined by commitment, personal service, and a vision for excellence that would shape the company’s DNA for decades to come.
By 1981, Bucan’s steady growth demanded larger premises. The business moved to 67 Schoeman Street, opposite Library Gardens, and expanded its product range to include Sharp Corporation and Casio innovations, from photocopiers and calculators to coin counters and cash registers. Two years later, in March 1983, Bucan’s footprint extended to Tzaneen, where it opened a branch that remains an integral part of the company’s success story.

The 1990s marked another milestone: Bucan relocated to its current home at 53 Bok Street, a move which symbolised its strength and stability.

In 2000, the company diversified even further with the launch of its stationery division, offering leading brands such as Pentel, Pilot, Treeline, Parrot, Rexel, Croxley, Typek and Rotatrim, along with a contemporary range of office furniture designed to meet the evolving needs of modern workplaces.

Today, Bucan Office Equipment and Stationery stands tall as a comprehensive office solutions provider, and it has become a name synonymous with trust, quality, and technical excellence throughout the Limpopo Province. Its partnership with SHARP, for Limpopo, continues to go from strength to strength. The company employs 37 people, with its Polokwane workshop now recognised as the largest technical service facility in the province.

Beyond its business success, Bucan’s true strength lies in its people. The company remains deeply committed to its employees, and proudly continues to offer pension funds, medical aid, and ongoing technical training in computers, printers, photocopiers, and cash registers.Several long-serving staff members have also been honoured for 5 and more years of loyal service, which is a testament to the family values and an enduring sense of belonging that define Bucan’s culture.

Today, under the capable leadership of owners/directors Michael Wood and Sandra Redelinghuys, Bucan continues to build on its legacy by blending tradition with innovation, and excellence with care.

As Bucan Office Equipment celebrates its 50th anniversary, it does so with immense pride and gratitude to its founders, its dedicated staff, its loyal clients, and the community that has supported it through the years.
Here’s to five decades of integrity, innovation, and service excellence, and to a future as bright and dynamic as the vision that started it all.

Congratulations to the entire Bucan family, both past and present, on 50 remarkable years of success. May the next exciting chapter be filled with continued growth, innovation, and prosperity!
