Phuti Mohale, a member of Pietersburg Road Runners started running at Saulrige High School in 2001

Phuti Mohale, a member of Pietersburg Road Runners started running at Saulrige High School in 2001.

“At Saulrige, if you didn’t participate in athletics, they forced you to remain in class until 16:00 to study,” says Phuti, who chose to rather participate in the 1 500m, 3 000m and 5 000m.

Some of his latest achievements are:

• He ran the Digit Vehicle Tracking 24 hour track race. Here he ran 177km in 23:59:00 and ended in second position.

• He won the Potties Marathon.

• He won the MTN Marathon in Mmotong.

• He won a Bill Rowan medal at this year’s Comrades Marathon.

“The biggest achievement for me was the Two Countries Marathon last week. I beat two Kenyan athletes and that was a dream come true,” says Phuti.

“I now have 11 gold medals and plan to win a lot more.” He wants to win the Comrades and add another gold medal to his collection. He also sees himself competing internationaly.

Phuti says he likes this sport because he can challenge other runners, but also himself. “I like to do what other athletes don’t expect of me and love to challenge elite runners,” explains Phuti.

Phuti works as a security guard and loves his job, but wishes he had more time to practise. “My job takes a lot of hours and I don’t always get enough time to practise between my work hours.

“I want to wish my fellow club member, Rufus Photo luck with the 21.1km Championships, which will be held in Cape Twon on Sunday,” says Phuti, who was also chosen to run at this event.
