Honour for faculty staff and students
The faculty of humanities at the University of Limpopo held a gala dinner and award ceremony
The faculty of humanities at the University of Limpopo held a gala dinner and award ceremony at Fusion Boutique Hotel last Friday to honour staff members and students.
The award ceremony was to also celebrate the conclusion of the spring lectures.
The awards were divided into four categories: research, teaching, most resourceful staff and faculty ambassadors.
Dr Makgwana Rampedi, the faculty’s acting executive dean said: “The research awards are meant to encourage staff to publish articles in accredited journals and to supervise students successfully at postgraduate levels. This should ultimately improve the research profile of the faculty of humanities”. She said the aim of the teaching awards was to also promote the quality of teaching and student learning. “It is no longer good enough for staff members to simply pitch for class and teach. They have to do so in a manner that motivates students so that they can pass all their modules satisfactorily,” she said.
Regarding the most resourceful staff members, Rampedi revealed that the objective was to ensure staff carry out additional responsibilities beyond the regular job assignments for the good of the faculty.
The faculty also honoured students who showed great academic potential and were exemplary in their behaviour. These students will be known as faculty ambassadors and will represent the faculty in various activities at the university.
The best established researchers awards were presented to Prof Tholene Sodi, Prof Israel Kibirige and Dr Osborn Chauke. Best female researcher award was awarded to Teresa Mashego and Prof Sheila Mmusi. Best lecturers were Dr Suresh Singh, Pieter Nagel and Itumeleng Chidi.
