September is Oral Health Month and Review asked gr. R learners from Pemps why they brushed their teeth and where the germs in their teeth came from.
Mutshidzi Malumedzha said: “I brush my teeth every day because I want them to be clean and healthy. If I do not brush my teeth, they will smell and have black things between them. The germs in my mouth are caused by the food I eat”.
Andiswa Sethosa said he brushed his teeth because he did not want to get mould. “I want my teeth to be healthy and strong like they show us on television. And when people do not brush their teeth, your mouth will get warm and the germs will come in and it will be very dirty.”
Tshepo Manamela said: “I brush my teeth so that my breath must not smell when I talk to my teacher and so that the black things in my mouth can get out. Wind and water causes our teeth to be dirty. When you drink water, the wind will blow things into your water and it will be dirty”.
Bonang Masola said he brushed his teeth because he did not want them to be dirty and to smell. “The black things in the mouth causes our teeth to be dirty.”
“I brush my teeth because I do not want germs on my teeth and I do not eat a lot of sweets and ice cream because that causes black things in the teeth and it makes them to rot,” said Hlulani Nshalati.
Kgotsi Kotsedi said he brushed his teeth because brushing teeth made you healthy and you looked beautiful when you smiled because all the “black things” would be gone. “Cornflakes make our teeth dirty, that is why we must brush after eating breakfast.”
Thabang Shabangu said brushing our teeth every day made us healthy and made our teeth strong to eat anything. “If we do not brush our teeth they will rot and stink.”
“I brush my teeth every day because I do not want people to smell my breath. Eating lots of sweets and not brushing your teeth causes your teeth to be dirty and smell,” said Lesego Rapotu.
