POLOKWANE – Eight teenage boys between the ages of 15 and 17 years were arrested for rape and robbery and were allegedly found in possession of a number of dangerous possessions in Disteneng last week.
Westenburg police spokesperson, Capt Mohlaka Mashiane said the teenagers were suspected of having robbed four people.
Of the four victims, two were a married couple, he said.
“After robbing them, two of the suspects allegedly raped the woman in front of her husband,” Mashiane said.
The suspects appeared before the Polokwane magistrate’s court last week and were released into their parents’ custody thereafter.
They are due to appear before court again on October 14.
Continuing their fight against crime, the Westenburg police arrested 35 people for public drinking over two weekends as part of Operation Tshola Byala (spill the liquor). Mashiane said seven shebeens were closed down and the owners were issued with fines, with hundreds of litres of alcohol being confiscated. Three illegal spaza shops were also closed down and the owners were also issued with fines.
Four other arrests were made, two for the possession of dagga, one for the possession of a dangerous weapon and one for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Mashiane said the police continued to prove they had zero tolerance towards crime. “We will work tirelessly to ensure those who engage in criminal activities are caught and punished to the full extent of the law so that our communities are safe,” he concluded.
