Global Handwashing Day (GHD) is a campaign to motivate and mobilise millions around the world to wash their hands with soap.
It takes place on October 15 every year.
The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of hand washing with soap as a key approach to disease prevention.
GHD was created at the annual World Water Week in 2008, initiated by the Public Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW). The theme for Global Handwashing Day’s inaugural year was Focus on School Children. Review asked gr R learners from Little Blessings Pre-school if they washed their hands regularly and why they washed them.
Kefilwe Letsoalo said: “Yes, I wash my hands every day before I eat, because my mother and teachers tell me to do so. I play a lot outside in the sandpit at school, so my hands get dirty and I must wash them”.
“Yes, I always wash my hands, because they get dirty and if I don’t wash my hands, the germs will go in my food. The germs come from my mouth when I cough. I cover my mouth with my hands and that’s where the germs come from,” Kundi Tshiovhe said.
Jessica Stehnken said: “Yes, I wash my hands because I eat with my hands most of the time, so I have to wash my hands”.
“Yes, I wash my hands, and everybody is supposed to wash their hands every day, because we go to the toilet and we touch a lot of people,” Ntila Hlungwani said.
Dean-Rico Mostert said he washes his day every time with soap and water, “because when we play outside in the sandpit, they get dirty”. Mignon Bronkhorst said: “Yes, we must always wash our hands with soap before we eat, so that we do not eat dirt”.
“Yes, I was my hands with soap and hot water to get the germs and the dirt out,” Ukatekile Mukhari said. Kopano Setole said: “I wash my hands every time before I eat, so that they are clean and I do not make my food dirty, because I eat with my hands”.
“Yes, we have to wash our hands every time we finish playing outside, or when we eat our food,” Lebo Phoolo said.
