POLOKWANE – Parts of the city were left without electricity recently following the theft of power cables at the Alpha power station, resulting in the loss of income for many businesses.
Residents are now concerned about an electricity box that is standing open on the corner of Dorp and Thabo Mbeki Street.
Situated across the road from a primary school, there are concerns that the open box may lead to children getting hurt or electrocuted if they play near it.
“It is worrying that this electrical box is standing open where there are children as young as six years old, who are curious.
“The box may be an open invitation that can lead to tragedy.
“The municipality should take extra precaution with boxes like these to prevent anyone from getting hurt and to prevent thieves from taking advantage of the box,” said Jan du Plessis, a resident.
According to municipal spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo, electrical boxes must stay locked for the safety of the public and those that are open are not due to the negligence of municipal workers, but due to vandalism.
You can report any open or vandalised electrical boxes to the municipality at (015) 290 2940.
Do not attempt to close the boxes yourself, to avoid injury and possible electrocution.
In the event that vandalism is suspected, report the matter to the police.
Polokwane police spokesperson, Ntobeng Phala, said besides the danger of getting injured, vandalism was a serious matter which could be prosecuted by law.
“The community is urged to prevent vandalism by reporting matters as soon as possible.
“Remember that the fight against crime begins with you,” said Phala.
