SEVEN Mutale police officials are facing suspension after a foetus went missing in Phalama-Tshafhasi, near Thohoyandou, last Sunday.
Mutale police spokesperson, WO Tshilidzi Nyambeni, said the police received a phone call from a resident who said a foetus had been found in their yard.
Police officials, including members of the forensic team, went to the scene where the foetus was found. The foetus’ legs were missing, he said.
“We suspect the legs were eaten by dogs.
“The police took photographs and covered the foetus with a plastic sheet and waited for the pathologists to arrive. When pathologists arrived, they lifted the plastic, but there was nothing underneath,” Nyambeni said.
“Now we are investigating a case of negligence against our members. The foetus is still missing,” he said.
Police investigations into the identity of the mother of the foetus led to the arrest of a 20-year-old learner in Gr. 11 at Hanyani Secondary School.
Nyambeni said she had been charged with concealment of a birth and appeared before the Mutale Magistrate’s Court last Monday.
The case was postponed to December 23 and she was released with a warning to appear again on that date.
