POLOKWANE – A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated by the Westenburg police after a motor vehicle allegedly drove into the fence of Noddy’s Playground and Pre-school on Wednesday evening.
The accident happened in Tom Swarts Street, and seemingly no one was injured.
The driver of the vehicle allegedly drove off without reporting the matter to the police or the owner of Noddy’s.
The police are still looking for the suspect.
Capt Mohlaka Mashiane, Westenburg police spokesperson confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving was being investigated and urged those with information that could help the police with their investigation, to contact the Westenburg police station at (015) 292 9410/15.
Helen Percent, a teacher at Noddy’s, said they received a call on Wednesday evening at about 23:00 that there was an accident at the school and that the water meter was damaged, with water running down the street.
“When we arrived at the scene, we found that a part of the fence near the water meter and the water meter were knocked down. We called the police and the municipality for assistance, but they did not respond immediately. The police arrived at 08:00 the following day and the municipality only came at 13:30,” explained Percent.
According to Percent, at about 10:00 the following day, they asked a local plumber to close the water meter as a lot of water was being wasted while they waited for the municipality to fix the broken water meter.
“We filled buckets with water so that we could at least have water to drink and water for the children to wash their hands, as we did not know when the municipality would come to fix the problem,” she said.
Percent wanted to know who would be held responsible for the water account as a lot of water was wasted, and according to her, the water waste was the municipality’s fault. “We called them and they only responded more than 12 hours after we reported the matter. We called the municipal call centre at (015) 290 2000 three times and each time the operator said they were sending someone. So who is to blame?” Percent asked.
Matshidiso Mothapo, a municipal spokesperson said they would investigate the matter and give comment as soon as possible.
