POLOKWANE – The shock of unwittingly being found in the midst of a violent road rage incident was exacerbated for a resident when he realised one of his attackers was Julius Malema.
Bertus Redelinghuys said he was driving home from work on Tuesday at around 17:00 when a Mercedes Benz with three occupants turned at the corner of Munnik and Grobler Street, and nearly collided with his vehicle.
“I hooted at the driver and indicated he must look before turning, and the vehicle pulled me off the road at a traffic light a short while later. Three men approached my vehicle,” he said.
He said he too alighted from his vehicle to enquire what was happening, and one man grabbed him by the arm and started shaking him.
“The second man I identified as Julius Malema. He shouted at me saying they would f*** me up, while the third man tried to grab my car keys.”
He said as he was struggling to free himself, Malema stepped forward and slapped him, hitting the car as well. “The men got back into their car and drove away.”
Redelinghuys went to the Polokwane police station and opened a case of assault and malicious damage to property.
Provincial police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed a case of common assault and damage to property had been opened by a motorist, who alleged that Malema and two men assaulted him at a traffic light in Polokwane on Tuesday.
Neither Malema or his spokesperson, Floyd Shivambu could be reached for comment by the time of going to print.
Malema, EFF commander in chief, addressed a rally in Mankweng on Tuesday afternoon.
