POLOKWANE – Polokwane Executive Mayor Cllr John Mpe on Wednesday inspected progress on the municipality’s ongoing road rehabilitation programme, using the site visit to also hand over new vehicles and equipment aimed at strengthening the municipality’s operational capacity.

The inspection forms part of the municipality’s drive to accelerate service delivery, with road rehabilitation currently under way across several parts of the city.

The wider programme, one of the municipality’s largest road rehabilitation and expansion projects, is aimed at improving road safety, reducing traffic congestion and providing durable infrastructure for the future.

Roads under rehabilitation

Streets currently being upgraded include Dorp, Burger, Voortrekker, Oost, Compensatie, Jorissen and Landdros Mare in Polokwane Central; Macdonald, Knox, Jasmyn, Katjepiering and Euphorbia in Flora Park; Jaipur, Monsoon and Istanbul in Nirvana; Leon, Coverdale, Kelly and Mohamed in Westenburg; and Veldspaat, Dendron/Witklip, Pietersburg, Emerald, Bulawayo, Railway, Lood, Mika and Fosfaat in Ladanna.

In Seshego, work is under way on Thaba Chueu, River Cross, Alf Makaleng, 68th Avenue, Zone 1 Extension, Solomon Mahlangu, Lefi, Johane, Mateo, Khudu, Marabe, 54th and 67th Streets.

The municipality is also upgrading the road linking R71/Paledi Mall, Mankweng Hospital and the University of Limpopo into a four-lane carriageway, aimed at improving traffic flow and accommodating growing transport demand in the area.

New equipment for operations

During the visit, Mpe handed over a 22-wheeler truck, two tractors and three double-cab bakkies to boost the municipality’s fleet.

The municipality says the additions will support grass-cutting operations, by-law enforcement and security activities, helping teams respond more effectively to service delivery needs across communities.
