THE police in Limpopo are on the trail of the murderers of a Merebank farmer and his wife at Zanzibar just outside Lephalale, as well as the people responsible for the ruthless assault of a Deer Park couple in Tzaneen over the weekend.
According to provincial police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, in the Merebank incident, a 69-year-old farmer and his 66-year-old wife were found murdered in their home in Lephalale.
He said the motive for the murders was not yet known, but investigations had already started in earnest and some of the neighbours and family members had already been interviewed. “A post mortem will also be conducted soon, which might shed more light on the matter,” he said.
In the Deer Park incident, two suspects – one armed with a firearm and the other with a knife – allegedly attacked a 68-year-old farmer and his wife while they were asleep, and demanded money from them.
Mulaudzi said the two suspects allegedly tortured the farmer with a hot iron rod after he refused to give in to their demands. He said the elderly man finally relented and the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
“Two suspects fitting the same description are believed to have robbed two Pakistani-owned shops in Bolobedu earlier in the day. The elderly farmer was treated in hospital and discharged. Investigations continue,” Mulaudzi said.
