THE Economic Freedom Fighter’s (EFF) commander-in-chief, Julius Malema verbally attacked the management of the University of Venda (Univen), calling them “fools who are full of hatred and incapable to lead”.
Malema said this at an EFF rally at Univen after university management denied the EFF access to their stadium to hold a rally on Sunday. He told spectators the management told EFF event organisers that the stadium was meant for football games and that an EFF meeting would kill the grass.
“They know that we will expose the dirty state of the residences there. They cannot stop the EFF. We are everywhere. Univen’s management is corrupt and incapacitated,” Malema said.
He said the university tried to sabotage the EFF rally by playing loud music from the very stadium that the EFF could not use for the rally due to the state of the grass. “They think the students will leave the EFF rally to go dancing. They are supposed to allow all political parties to campaign here so that students could get to know the total political landscape,” he said.
Malema used the rally to attack president Jacob Zuma. “Our country’s economy is collapsing under Zuma. He is incapable to lead. In previous eras we were leading the African economy, now we are number two. Zuma loves his cattle more than the people of South Africa,” he said.
He spoke about the state of the country, saying that students graduated to be unemployed. “Then you will be taken to the credit bureau for failing to pay back your loans from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).”
Malema also attacked ANC deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa in his speech. “He spent R18 million on a wild animal. If he was a caring man, he would have given that R18 million to poor students or built RDP houses for the poor. Punish the ANC by not voting for them,” he urged students.
Univen spokesperson, Wilhelmina Mabogo told CV that the EFF applied to use the university’s stadium on Sunday. She said their application was denied because a Safa Castle League game between Univen FC and Tshakhuma KK was scheduled for that date.
She said the EFF and the university agreed in writing that the EFF would use ground one, a field next to the stadium free of charge. “The fact that there are many political organisations active on campus that operate freely is enough proof that Univen allows all political parties to campaign on campus,” she said.
Mabogo said the loud music that Malema complained about was actually the music played through the stadium’s sound system as part of the soccer game’s festivities.
