Avoid walking alone when it is dark

The Westenburg police urged residents to use public transport and to avoid walking alone in the dark after a number of common robbery cases have been reported in the area recently.

POLOKWANE – The Westenburg police urged residents to use public transport and to avoid walking alone in the dark after a number of common robbery cases have been reported in the area recently.

Capt Mohlaka Mashiane, Westenburg police spokesperson, explained that, as the seasons are changing, the sun rises later in the morning and sets earlier at night.

Those who walk to and from work in the dark become victims of common robbery.

“It is for their own safety that we appeal to the community to use public transport or to walk in groups,” Mashiane said.

The police also said they needed help in finding an unknown man who killed a 36-year-old man in Disteneng at about 21:00 on Saturday night.

The two men were arguing about a woman when one man produced a knife and stabbed the other in the neck and chest.

The victim was certified dead on the scene by paramedics.

A murder case is being investigated by the Westenburg police.

Anyone with information that can help with the investigation can contact the Westenburg police station at (015) 292 9410/15.

Still in the Westenburg policing area, the police closed five shebeens during Operation Paseka (Operation Easter); one in the Soetdo-rings area, two on the Percy Fyfe Road and two in Disteneng.

The owners were issued with fines and the police confiscated their stock.

The police also arrested one man for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and he will appear in the Polokwane magistrate’s court soon.
