Litterly left to die

The horror of seeing a litter of kittens crushed by the wheels of a car driving over them will remain with her six-year-old son for some time to come.

POLOKWANE – The horror of seeing a litter of kittens crushed by the wheels of a car driving over them will remain with her six-year-old son for some time to come.

Jo-Ann Wessels travels along Veldspaat Road regularly, and said this was what her son had to witness recently.

“There is no way of explaining the horror of something like this,” she said. According to Wessels and several other motorists, the road is being used by people to dump their unwanted animals.

Another road where this horror occurs regularly is the Leeuwkuil-Percy Fyfe road, according to Leeuwkuil resident, Johan Venter.

“We have found several ‘stray’ dogs along this road lately. They are in quite good condition, but do not belong to anyone in the area,” he said.

It seems dogs are dumped by their owners along these roads and left to fend for themselves. Kittens and puppies have been found in black refuse bags or boxes, sometimes dead and sometimes alive, motorists told Review.

SPCA Polokwane spokesperson Anton du Bruyn said anyone who made themselves guilty of the neglect or endangerment of animals by simply leaving them on the side of the road could face a charge of animal cruelty and appear before court.

“People found guilty of cruelty to animals can be liable for hefty fines.

“People are urged to bring unwanted animals to the SPCA in Polokwane rather than disposing of them in an inhumane and illegal manner,” Du Bruyn said.

Unwanted animals can be taken to the Polokwane SPCA situated at Plot 46, Langdale, on the Roode-poort road. The SPCA can be contacted at (015) 287 4009.
