Africa day in full colour at UNIVEN

RESIDENTS from all corners of the Vhembe region, showed up at the University of Venda's (Univen) Africa Day celebrations in their traditional attire on Friday.

RESIDENTS from all corners of the Vhembe region, showed up at the University of Venda’s (Univen) Africa Day celebrations in their traditional attire on Friday.

Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now known as the African Union.

Univen’s management organised a day filled with cultural activities, traditional dances, a parade and other performances. Students and employees also signed a pledge of solidarity with the 276 school girls that were abducted in Nigeria.

The theme of the event was: Africa United in Cultural Diversity to Build a Caring and Better Continent.

The newly appointed MEC for sport, art and culture, Nandi Ndalane, addressed the people at the event and said her department was the custodian of the province’s cultures, heritage and achievements.

She reminded residents that the future was in their hands and said students’ education was the key to development in Africa.

Deputy vice chancellor for operations at Univen, Jannie Zaaiman, said Africa Day was very important to the university, because Univen was a university focused on transformation.

“The diverse cultures of Africa and the spirit of Ubuntu inspired transformation at this university,” he said.
