What is a ‘spinster’?

Review asked a few gr. 3 and 4 learners from Hadashah Learning Centre what the word "spinster" means.

POLOKWANE – Review asked a few gr. 3 and 4 learners from Hadashah Learning Centre what the word “spinster” means.

Katlego Malatji said: “I do not know what a spinster is. I have never heard that word before. Could it be a star maybe? If I was to think hard, I would say it was a type of star”.

“Spinster? I have never heard about it before. What is it? I think it is a star that spins in the sky at night,” said Kganya Velempini.

Katlego Chuene said this was the first time she too heard the word.

“I am not sure what it is, but I think it is a spinning top, or a disk that we throw at each other when we play outside.”

Ofentse Mapedi said: “a spinster is a star that spins. It is the only star in the sky that spins, the others can’t spin”.

“I don’t know what a spinster is. I have heard the word once, but it was a long time ago. I will ask my teacher when I get back to class. She will tell me and I will come and tell you,” said Jordan Vogel.

“No, I do not know what a spinster is, but it could be a star maybe; an orange star that is very bright. It shines brighter than all the other stars,” said Neo Malatji.

Neo Ngulube adopted an investigative attitude and vowed to find out what a “spinster was”.

“I will have to ask my teacher or look in the dictionary when I get back to class.”

“A spinster is a machine that someone uses to make clothes with. It is like a wool and needle that makes clothes. My mom uses it all the time to make our clothes,” said Nanette Venter.
