Body found at city pool

POLOKWANE – When Sakkie Freidberg went for his usual walk last Thursday, it never occurred to anyone that it would be the last walk he took.

Freidberg (86), a resident of Ons Tuiste Old Age Home, was reported missing after he failed to return home following his walk.

Strauss Soer, a private investigator, assisted the police, family and friends in a search for Freidburg. Henk Joubert, a pastor from a local church, also assisted in the search. Joubert was the one to find Freidberg’s lifeless body on Friday, which was hidden on a slope between some rocks and bushes at the city’s public swimming pool. His wedding ring and cellphone were missing.

According to Mary Cassiday, speaking on behalf of the old age home, Freidberg usually took a walk to the public swimming pool where he would sit and eat before walking back to the home.

Freidberg is survived by a son, Mario Freidberg from Krugersdorp, his daughter Madelyn Scheepers, six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at the Dutch Reformed Church in Webster Street on Friday at 11:00. Speaking on behalf of the family, Scheepers thanked everyone who participated in the search. She also expressed her gratitude for all the votes of sympathy received.

Polokwane police spokesperson, WO Lesiba Ramoshaba, said that the police had opened an inquest, and were investigating Freidberg’s death. He said the cause of death had not yet been determined.

According to Soer it is suspected that Freidberg was murdered for his wedding ring and cellphone. Ramoshaba could not confirm or deny this.
