POLOKWANE – The municipality has requested people in the city to bear with them for the duration of the roadworks that are currently being done at intersections throughout the city.
The project is part of the Polokwane Integrated Rapid Transport System (IRPTS). The roads in question form part of a city-wide IRPTS feeder routes network. Feeder routes are those routes that will be used by the feeder services buses. Essentially, these buses will transport people from residential areas to the central business district into the main IRPTS routes.
However, some of the roads that have been identified for feeder routes are not in good condition. Municipal spokesperson, Malesela Maubane, explained that these roads needed to be ready before the IRPTS became operational. “To get some of these roads ready, we need to have them rehabilitated (repaired) to avoid disruptions due to roadworks when the IRPTS is operational,” he said.
Road rehabilitation includes:
• Patching of potholes.
• Crack sealing.
• 30mm asphalt overlay.
• Road markings.
Two IRPTS feeder routes were identified for implementation within this current financial year:
• In Genl Viljoen Street and De Wet Drive: these intersections should be completed with a new surface by Saturday.
• In Marshall and McDonald Streets: these intersections should be completed with a new surface by Saturday, July 26.
Other areas have also been identified for a new asphalt overlay and these include Boshoff, Plein, Van Warmelo and Genl. Viljoen Streets, as well as Outspan and De Wet Drives.
The project is due to be completed by August 10.
“The municipality apologises for any inconvenience and urges motorists to be patient with the work being done,” Maubane said.
