POLOKWANE – Voting stations in wards 20 and 23 in Polokwane, where the by-elections will take place tomorrow (Wednesday), will open at 07:00.
The by-elections promise to be a tough battle between the DA and ANC in the city, especially in ward 20, where during the elections in 2011, the ANC won with a very small margin.
On February 15, 2012, after the resignation of the ANC ward councillor, the DA won the ward with 62,87 % votes of the 23,99% voter turnout. 8 825 registered voters are eligible to vote in the ward.
Ward 23, with 8 788 registered voters, was won comfortably by the DA during the May 2011 elections: Anne Kirkpatrick drew 64, 26% of the 3 548 votes cast, while the ANC won 24,48% of the votes.
Noah Mamabolo is the ANC’s candidate for ward 20, while Dorcus Mogano will contest ward 23 for the party. The DA’s candidate in ward 20 is Franco Marx and Roelof Lourens is the party’s candidate in ward 23.
Voting stations will stay open until 21:00.
