POLOKWANE – The municipal fire department was evidently not equipped to deal with a small fire in a skip bin in Laboria on Thursday.
The firefighters were unable to douse the flames, as they were having problems with the water pump on the fire truck.
Several passersby including Jack Maubane tried to assist the firefighters to no avail. Maubane said seemingly the firefighter’s assistant had flooded the engine while attempting to start it. “There was nothing we could do. I am just glad that it was only a skip bin on fire and not a house, because then everything would be lost,” Maubane commented.
The engine was eventually started, and the fire was eventually extinguished.
According to the municipal spokesperson, Malesela Maubane, the municipality was not experiencing any problems with any of their equipment.
He said, however, there was a problem with inadequately trained and qualified staff but the matter was receiving attention.
