DA retains 2 city wards
The DA has retained wards 20 and 23 of the city in a landslide victory after the by-elections on Wednesday.
POLOKWANE – The DA has retained wards 20 and 23 of the city in a landslide victory after the by-elections on Wednesday.
Countrywide the DA has won 17 out of 19 contested by-elections.
In Ward 20, the DA’s support grew from 47% to 64%. The DA’s Franco Marx has won the ward with 1 219 votes (64,81%) against the ANC candidate Noah Mamabolo’s 662 votes (35,11%).
The total votes cast were 1 886 or 21,37% out of 8 825 registered voters. Five ballots were spoiled.
In ward 23, the DA has further increased its majority from 64% to 83%. Roelof Lourens easily took ward 23 with 1 177 votes (83,95%), against the ANC’s Dorcus Mogano’s 225 votes (16,01%). The total votes cast out of 8788 registered voters, were 1 405, or 15,99%. Three ballots were spoiled.
The DA thanked all the voters who came out in large numbers to support them in these wards.
“We will continue to work towards improving service delivery in these wards. These results are an indication that the DA will continue to grow as we spread our message of no tolerance of corruption, better service delivery and job creation,” provincial DA leader Jacques Smalle said
The new councillors are expected to be sworn in at a special council meeting on August 28.
