SEVEN people narrowly escaped death yesterday (Tuesday) after a truck overturned, taking a sedan with it just outside Polokwane on the Mogwadi road.

According to the truck driver who did not wish to be identified, the accident was caused by a minibus taxi that suddenly stopped in front of him without warning.

He said he tried to avoid colliding with the minibus taxi by swerving off the road, but another sedan was also in the truck’s path.

“I tried to avoid colliding with the two vehicles and that was when I lost control of the truck,” he said.

The driver of the sedan, who also wished to remain anonymous, told CV a different story. He said the truck driver tried to overtake too many cars at once without checking that the road was clear.

“We all had to avoid each other by driving off the road. I think we both lost control of our vehicles and our vehicles both overturned,” he said.

There were four people in the truck and three in the sedan. No one was injured in the accident, However, one passenger in the sedan fled the scene for no apparent reason and the police pursued him.

The truck’s licence disc had expired on August 31, yet the truck allegedly still travelled long distances.

People crowded the scene of the accident and some were seen helping themselves to the cargo that fell off the truck.
