DA to lay charges against cops in forced removal of muni officials

THE DA Limpopo leader, Jacques Smalle says the DA intends to lay criminal charges with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) against the police who forcefully removed municipal officials from the Mogalakwena Municipality last Monday

MOKOPANE – THE DA Limpopo leader, Jacques Smalle says the DA intends to lay criminal charges with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) against the police who forcefully removed municipal officials from the Mogalakwena Municipality last Monday

Smalle alleged that this action was illegal, and politically motivated.

He said the DA’s efforts to get answers from Mahwelereng police station commander, Col Lucas Mogwaneng regarding whether the correct procedures were followed and who instructed the raid, were fruitless.

“Due to this action, the municipality is failing to provide services to the people in the area.

“We condemn any political interference in the municipality and lack of political will to resolve the Mogalakwena Municipality problems, as well as the total shutdown of services in the municipality,” he said.

ANC provincial spokesperson, Kumbudzo Ntshavheni, said the ANC was not involved in the Mogalakwena matter.

“The DA created these problems in the first place by submitting a no-confidence vote against former mayor Tlhalefi Mashamaite and his councillors.

“Our ANC councillors also submitted a no-confidence vote. The ANC decided to discipline them as per ANC protocol,” she said.

“The DA is just making a noise, they don’t know our policies. If they want to know them, they can join the ANC,” Ntshavheni concluded.

Provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronél Otto said the police were forced to resort to extreme measures.

The police took action on the strength of a court order, she said.
