Muni bags awards for best performance

The Polokwane Municipality was awarded several awards during the department of public works, roads and infrastructure's eighth provincial Kamoso Awards, which were held at St. Marco Hall last Thursday.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality was awarded several awards during the department of public works, roads and infrastructure’s eighth provincial Kamoso Awards, which were held at St. Marco Hall last Thursday.

One of these awards was for best performing municipality.

Different units and implementing agents were honoured for their successful implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

The Kamoso Awards were launched in 2007 by the national department of public works with the aim of rewarding public bodies and non-state sector for excelling in terms of EPWP.

Guests at the awards ceremony included the Polokwane mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng, MEC for agriculture and rural development, Joy Matshoge, MEC for health, Ishmael Kgetjepe, the Lepelle-Nkumpi mayor, Ivy Phaahla and the Fetakgomo mayor, Kukie Sefala.

There were four different sectors which included infrastructure, environment and culture, social, non-state and special category.

The winners in the infrastructure sector:

• Best construction project – Marandzhe culvert construction from the Thulamela Municipality.

• Best maintenance programme – Ema o Iphedishe EPWP community-based routine maintenance programme from the Polokwane Municipality.

• Best infrastructure department – department of public works.

• Best district municipality – Mopani District Municipality.

• Best local municipality – Mookgophong Municipality.

• Best innovative project – Capricorn inhouse road routine maintenance.

• Recognition of the district municipality – Capricorn District Municipality.

• Best local municipality – Blouberg Municipality.

• Best department – department of sports, arts and culture.

• Best programme – Working on Waste.

The winners in the environment and culture sector:

• Best provincial project – Aganang landcare project: department of agriculture.

• Best project local municipality – Polokwane grass-cutting: Polokwane Municipality.

• Best innovative project – Zebediela citrus: department of agriculture.

Winners in the social sector:

• Best innovative project – Moteku créche, Sekhokho Botlokwa.

• Best programme – National School Nutrition Programme.

• Best district: national school nutrition programme – Sekhukhune District Municipality.

• Best district: home community-based care – Waterberg District Municipality.

• Best district: early childhood development – Vhembe District Municipality.

• Best district – Vhembe District Municipality.

The winners in the non-state sector:

• Best project: non-profit organisations – Phela o Phedishe Health and Welfare Care Group.

• Best non-profit organisation – Far North Youth Development Initiative.

• Best innovative project – Phela o Phedishe Health and Welfare Care Group.

• Best project: community work programme – Bathuseng OVC/HCBC.

The winners in the special category were:

• Best sector – Non-state sector.

• Overall best performing municipality – Polokwane Municipality.

• Best functional district forum – Capricorn District Municipality.

• Integrated incentive grant: Best municipality – Polokwane Municipality.
