TZANEEN – A COUNCILLOR attached to the Greater Tzaneen Municipality was shocked to find fire consuming his luxury vehicle at his home in Nkowankowa during the early hours of Friday morning.
Dodo Mushwana, who is leading the community’s fight against crime in Nkowankowa and surrounding villages, said he was awoken by a car alarm and went outside to investigate.
“I found the car burning at the front and at the back. The fire was already blazing out of control. It looked like an inflammable substance had been poured on the vehicle before it was set on fire,” Mushwana said.
Mushwana’s car was damaged just a day after eight suspected criminals believed to be members of Boko Haram and K9 gangs were apprehended by residents and handed over to the police.
Residents had been on a search for suspected criminals who had terrorised them.
Nkowankowa police spokesperson, WO Seth Magadzi, confirmed that a case of malicious damage to property had been opened for investigation and no arrests had been made yet.
Magadzi could neither confirm nor deny that the incident was linked to the arrest of suspected gang members in the area. The suspected criminals who were handed over to the police by residents, were released on warning on Friday.
