Municipalities to battle it out on sports fields

Local municipal personnel will compete in various sporting codes during the Inter-Municipal Sports of South Africa (Imssa) provincial games, which will be held in Musina on May 9.

POLOKWANE – Local municipal personnel will compete in various sporting codes during the Inter-Municipal Sports of South Africa (Imssa) provincial games, which will be held in Musina on May 9.

The personnel will take part in various sporting codes such as soccer, netball, pool, golf, fishing, volleyball and table tennis.

Imssa is focused on municipal personnel sport as part of employee wellness programmes. The organisation was established in 2011 and is an affiliate member of the Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (Saimsa), the only structure that looks at the development of municipal personnel sport within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

National Imssa president, Alpheus “Jomo” Mashamaite, says the main objective of the wellness programme is to unify municipal personnel through sport.

“The programme is very effective, but we still encourage other municipalities that are not part of the programme to join us so we can grow the programme,” says Mashamaite. The provincial IMSSA games serve as preparation for the international Saimsa games, which will take place in Lesotho in September.
