POLOKWANE – A large contingent of police, traffic and municipal security officers were seen to hold a routine blitz at the Indian Plaza in Excelsior Street on Friday and Tuesday.
All entrances to the Indian Centre were cordoned off by police vehicles and taxis wanting to enter the plaza parked in and blocked at least one lane of the street, causing traffic congestion.
Capt Ntobeng Phala, spokesperson of the Polokwane police station said the blitz was a routine inspection called Operation Sweep Clean and they were mostly looking for taxis without permits and removed cars being fixed on the premises illegally as dirty and oily water and oil are thrown on the ground. Some hawkers also did not have permits.
“Nobody was arrested,” Phala said, “but some cars to be fixed illegally in the area were impounded by the traffic department and their owners would have to pay to get them released.
