Polokwane LGBTQI+ activist remembered as dedicated public servant
LGBTQI+ activist Philip Ramasenya, who rose from cleaner to supervisor at Polokwane Municipality, has been remembered as a dedicated public servant.
POLOKWANE – The sudden death of LGBTQI+ and political activist Philip Ramasenya (38) has left many in mourning, with tributes highlighting his contribution to both public service and community activism.
Ramasenya, who lived in Seshego, was described by Mayor John Mpe as a dedicated public servant and a reliable supervisor in the municipality’s facility management unit.
From cleaner to supervisor
Speaking at Ramasenya’s memorial service at Jack Botes Hall on Friday, following his passing on June 15, Mpe reflected on his journey within the municipality.
“Philip joined Polokwane Municipality in March 2018 as a cleaner. Like many who start at the bottom of the ladder, he could have chosen to do only what was expected of him. But Philip was different,” said Mpe.
He added that Ramasenya’s promotion to supervisor in 2024 was earned through hard work and commitment.
“It was recognition of a man who had demonstrated reliability, initiative and a willingness to serve beyond the call of duty, not an act of charity,” he said.
Prominent figures pay tribute
The memorial service, as well as the funeral, drew several prominent figures from political and civil society circles.
Among those who paid tribute were:
- Capricorn Ignited LGBTQI+ chairperson Thato Kgobe
- Former MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Onicca Kwakwa
- Capricorn Mayor Mamedupi Teffo
Teffo noted that Ramasenya also served as the regional convener of the LGBTQI+ desk in the ANC Women’s League.
Laid to rest in Seshego
The funeral service was held at the Ngoako Ramahlodi Hall in Zone 2 on Saturday, before he was laid to rest at the Zone 8 cemetery.
Tributes also poured in on social media, where many referred to him simply as ‘Comrade Philip’, reflecting his strong ties to local political and community movements.
Among those who expressed condolences was Deputy Minister of Police Polly Boshielo, in her capacity as a senior provincial leader of the ANC.
Ramasenya is survived by a sibling, Kwena, as well as cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents.
