POLOKWANE – A 43-year-old Urban Security guard was assaulted when three armed men broke into Sand Hawks Polokwane in the early hours on Wednesday morning.
Polokwane police spokesperson, Capt Ntobeng Phala said the men demanded the guard take them to the storeroom where new truck tyres were kept and demanded that the guard tell them about the clocking system that the guards used.
“The guard was then assaulted and tied up. Twenty tyres were stolen from the storeroom and the men fled the scene with a bakkie. The guard was found later by his colleague who notified the police of the incident,” said Phala.
He said the police went down the gravel road they suspected the men used to flee and 15 of the 20 tyres were recovered.
“A firearm with ammunition was also found near some of the tyres,” he said.
One of Urban Security’s night managers told Review that the police together with the security company found the tyres and that Urban Security would like to thank the police for their excellent service.
He said the guard was not seriously injured and would be back at work soon.
He added that a suspect was apprehended and was being questioned by the police, however, the police could not confirm this at the time of going to print. Werner Greyvenstein, Sand Hawks tracking manager, said they were in the process of verifying that the tyres found on the side of the road were indeed the ones that were stolen from their premises. He said camera footage showed that the men had knowledge of the cameras on the premises.
The police call on anyone with information on the robbery to contact their nearest police station.
