RAF angel comes to family’s rescue

'The best things in life come when you least expect it and when you need them the most' Danine de Beer

POLOKWANE – The best things in life come when you least expect it and when you need them the most.

This was part of a message Danine de Beer sent to Review after her experience with the Road Accident Fund (RAF) office in Polokwane.

In the message, De Beer wanted to thank the RAF claims manager, Christina Mthethwa.

She said her experience with the RAF started when her son, Neville was seriously injured in an accident and she completed paperwork for a claim from the RAF.

“My son was in a serious accident and remained in a coma. I was extremely distraught and very emotional and did not know what to do or who would help me. And to be honest, I did not expect good service at the RAF because of all the bad stories you hear,”De Beer said.

She said Mthethwa took the lead and helped to console her, assisting in any possible way.

De Beer added that Mthethwa and her team arranged hospital visits, doctors’ reports and even helped to transfer her son to a different hospital and rehabilitation facility.

“Christina went above and beyond her duties and kept in touch with me, being my shoulder to cry on. She was my biggest source of support,” she said.

When the news of Neville’s sudden passing broke, Mthethwa stepped up to the plate again and helped with funeral arrangements.

“The only way I can describe these people in one word would be to say that they are nothing less then angels, God-sent angels,” De Beer said.

Mthethwa said she had been working with several cases, but that De Beer’s case stood out for her and touched her in a way few cases ever did.

“I believe that a person can never have the attitude that something does not affect them and therefore they do not care. When someone is in need, it is the responsibility of everyone to get involved and lend a hand. You must always care, I do,” Mthethwa told Review.

She said she still kept in touch with De Beer and thanked the family for their kind words.
