MOKOPANE – A RESIDENT of Ga-Madiba village celebrated her 105th birthday on July 4 and even showed off some nifty dance moves with councillors of the Mogalakwena Municipality, who were part of the celebration.

Raesetja Ntetji Tsoai celebrated her birthday in style and shared delicious cake with friends, family and the councillors.

Tsoai boasts 10 children, 36 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, 26 great-great grandchildren and four great-great-great grandchildren.

She said: “the secret to a long life is keeping active and eating as healthy as possible at all times”.

She encouraged guests, especially young people to refrain from drugs and to respect their elders.

Acting municipal speaker, Suzan Choga, gave a short speech in honour of Tsoai: “we are glad and honoured to be part of this celebration. We believe koko Tsoai is one of the women who played a big role in the freedom we are enjoying today”.

“On behalf of the Mogalakwena Municipality, we are indeed blessed to be part of this celebration. As the latter speaker has indicated, koko Tsoai is a remarkable woman who participated in one of the most historic events in the struggle for freedom and women’s rights in South Africa that took place on August 9, 1956 in Pretoria, when more than 20 000 women of different races marched to the Union Buildings to deliver petitions to the then prime minister, JG Strijdom against the carrying of passes,” said one of the councillors, Francinah Mutshinya.

“You are our role model and we will learn a lot from koko. Wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo’ (you strike a woman, you strike a rock). Happy birthday and may you see many more years to come,” Mutshinya ended her toast with a smile.
