LIMPOPO – Hundreds of mourners from all walks of life gathered at the Levubu Christelike Gemeente to pay their last respects to one of the area’s well-known mothers, Regina Swart on Friday, July 10.
Regina (46) of Shayandima in Thoyandou died on Monday, July 6 of natural causes.
She will be remembered for her golden heart and generosity, having helped many needy families and individuals. She committed her entire life to serving and caring for the poor and disadvantaged.
Regina and her husband, Gerhardt had adopted five children, namely Takkies, Serious, Sarel, Shaun and Koperaal. At one time, she had 13 children living in her home in Shayandima, whom she fed and took care of their schooling. Her generosity endeared her to the local community that she and her husband had become part of. While being employed at NTK Venda in Muledane, she still found time to do good deeds and this earned her the nickname ‘Mother of the Nation’.
To show their love for her and to honour her, the church hall was packed to capacity and some people had to listen to the funeral proceedings while standing outside.
Among the speakers at the funeral was ANC stalwart, Dr Tshenuwani Farisani. Farisani said he came to know the family when he went to their shop to buy farming tools. “I was attracted by the way they treated people and clients and immediately our friendship blossomed. I am just sad that she passed on before coming to my small farm as we had arranged,” he said.
Pastor Craig Whitcomb, who conducted the sermon, shared words of comfort with Regina’s family and friends.
“Lean unto the Lord and He will comfort you in this time of need and grief,” he advised.
One of Regina’s adopted children, Takkies, said the death of their mother had left a void in their hearts. “She treated us like her own blood children and we will always miss her warmth and caring,” he said.
Gerhardt said he was consoled by the fact that there was no pain for her anymore as she was with the Lord. “No one can replace her presence and we will always remember her for her smile and warmth and love for all people. We will miss her as a family,” he said.
