LIMPOPO – A MAN from Majeje village outside Phalaborwa died in police custody last week.
According to eye-witnesses and family members, Peter Maluleke (35) had earlier in the day participated in a peaceful protest against their local headman, who was accused by villagers of embezzling village funds. However, he left the march and went to have a beer in the tavern.
Shortly thereafter the police stormed into the tavern and allegedly grabbed Maluleke by the throat and beat him severely.
A few hours later, Maluleke had been arrested and was put in a prison cell. He died in the Lulekane police cell after suffering serious blood loss and having had excruciating pain.
The Maluleke family wanted answers, according to family spokesperson, Anna Ramalepe, and was prepared to put the funeral on hold until the police had explained to the family why Maluleke was was killed.
Maluleke’s wife, Dephney Mohale, sent out a plea to national police commissioner, Riah Phiyega and police minister, Nathi Nhleko, to help bury her husband with dignity. Mohale, who has two children with Maluleke, further requested assistance to raise her children, Vuhlari (4) and Vutivi (1). “My man was a good husband. He wouldn’t even hurt a fly,” she said.
Provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronél Otto, confirmed that the death of Maluleke whilst in custody was being investigated.
Head of the House of Traditional Leaders in Limpopo, Malesela Dikgale said the house was aware of the impasse at the village and undertook to investigate the matter.
“We are still speaking to both parties and we will report back accordingly pending our investigations,” he said.
