This town is full of sh*t

The unbearable stench and probable health hazzard that Eltivallas residents have been forced to live with for a couple of months is now under investigation.

LIMPOPO -“We are investigating the allegations of overflowing sewage in Eltivillas,” said Louis Bobodi, spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality on Tuesday.

This follows the months of unbearable stench that Eltivallas residents have been forced to live with – which Makhado Municipality has failed to attend to.

Local businesses such as Eltivillas Filling Station, the abattoir and farms as well as schools and clinics, are enormously affected. In some areas, the sewage flows from bathrooms in residential areas, causing an unbearable smell.

DA Limpopo Leader, Jacques Smalle, said the party had laid criminal charges against the municipal managers of Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), Emmanuel Maluleke, and Makhado Municipality, Isaac Mutshinyali, as they had failed to comply with the provisions of the National Water Act (No 36 of 1998) as well as the Constitution.

He said both municipalities deliberately ignored the DA’s calls to repair the sewerage system as it causes great harm to the environment and poses a massive health risk to the local businesses and residents of Louis Trichardt living adjacent to where the sewage is overflowing.

“The sewage is also flowing in the streets of the industrial area of Louis Trichardt and towards the railway lines. This has caused significant environmental pollution, while the municipality fails to take reasonable measures to prevent environmental harm. We are also concerned about the possibility of the underground water that might also be contaminated, putting the lives of the residents using boreholes at risk,” Smalle said.

Smalle further indicated that the DA would write to Environment MEC, Seaparo Sekoati, to request that he dispatch officials to investigate the matter and ensure that any officials implicated were held accountable. “We hope for a speedy investigation on Maluleke and Mutshinyali, and a handover for prosecution without delay,” Smalle said.

By Tuesday afternoon, no comment had been received from Matodzi Ralushai, spokesperson for the VDM.
