Many people wouldn't know about International Bow Tie Day, or that it even exists
POLOKWANE – Not a lot of people know about bow ties or prefer to wear them, but Hoërskool Pietersburg principal, Willie Schoeman, says he decided that after he turned 60 this year, he would start wearing bow ties, a tradition which his son Daniel has now caught on to.
Schoeman has 12 bow ties and has a knack for making them look dapper and funky!
Celebrated on 28 August, International Bow Tie Day celebrates the timeless classic that is the bow tie. The bow tie is a type of neck tie that originated in the 17th Century in which Croatian mercenaries would tie scarves around their necks to hold up their shirts. Most of these nifty neckties are made from silk, polyester, cotton or a mixture of different fabrics. Most modern bow ties are tied using a common shoelace knot.
In Polokwane, men can find affordable bow ties at Bogart and Lahom at Mall of the North.
Boggart’s manager, Thabo Mogoboya, says bow ties are becoming more and more popular, especially for weddings, as men now wear bow ties to match the colour of their partners’ outfits.
Boggart stocks a wide variety of different bow ties with prices ranging from R250 to R400.
Lahom’s manager, Mike Malebana, says the best way to dress up a bow tie is to pair it up with a classy shirt that complements the bow tie.
