The government is determined to flush out those who misrepresent their academic qualifications following the arrest of the University of Limpopo's (UL) labour relations manager, Lesiba Lazaurous Lebelo (59), by the Hawks on Tuesday.
POLOKWANE – The University of Limpopo’s (UL) labour relations manager, Lesiba Lazaurous Lebelo (59), was arrested by the Hawks in Penina Park on Tuesday evening in connection with fraud.
Hawks spokesperson, Lt Robert Netshiunda, said Lebelo was employed by the university in 1996 and presented an allegedly fraudulent matric certificate. Netshiunda further said Lebelo worked at the university for 18 years prior to his arrest.
“He has earned over R10 million since he was employed,” Netshiunda added.
“The Hawks received a tip-off from a resident about Lebelo’s qualifications and following an investigation, he was arrested. He appeared before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and was granted bail of R3 000. The case was remanded to 26 November for further investigation to take place,” Netshiunda said.
Government is determined to flush out those who misrepresent their academic qualifications.
Speaking on behalf of the Department of Higher Education, Donald Liphoko; “The incidents of misrepresentation, which appear to be on the rise, will not be tolerated as they impact negatively on the reputation of the country, its institutions and the credibility of the National Qualifications Framework.”
He said claiming qualifications that one does not have in the pursuit of employment opportunities is fraudulent and a criminal offence. “We would like to caution people who are embellishing their CVs with fraudulent academic qualifications that the government is committed to rooting out such behaviour,” he warned.
