R1,9 million investment in new mobile eye-care unit

MTN SA Foundation, in partnership with the national Department of Health and Lomas Healthcare, announced a R1,9 million investment into a mobile eye-care unit which will provide Limpopo with much-needed easy access to quality optometric services.

LIMPOPO – MTN SA Foundation, in partnership with the national Department of Health and Lomas Healthcare, announced a R1,9 million investment into a mobile eye-care unit which will provide Limpopo with much-needed easy access to quality optometric services.

This state-of-the-art unit will provide a range of optometric services such as colour vision, glaucoma and visual field testing.

In terms of the partnership, the provincial Department of Health will provide capacity and resources to run the unit as well as identify the areas that require the services of this unit, including schools.

As a company with extensive experience in running healthcare units, Lomas Healthcare will provide day-to-day support as well as provide extensive training to the healthcare workers on how to run the unit and operate the specialised equipment.

“We are confident that this unit will go a long way towards bringing quality healthcare to remote communities.

“This is another way that MTN is using its foundation and its technology to make a positive impact in the lives of the communities it operates in,” Kusile Mthunzi-Hairwadzi, general manager of MTN SA Foundation.

To ensure long-term sustainability of this investment, MTN has pledged a 12-month vehicle warranty and will also provide free internet connectivity to the unit.

Areas of focus have already been identified, with special attention given to providing comprehensive mobile eye care services to learners and ensuring that there is minimal disruption to their education process or calendar.

The unit handover comes just in time for the provincial Department of Health’s participation in Eye Care Awareness Month, an annual eye-health initiative that is set to take place in October.
