There is no stopping LadiMash Productions
Despite a lack of theatres in the province, LadiMash Productions is determined to produce top-notch productions
POLOKWANE – Despite a lack of theatres in the province, LadiMash Productions is determined to produce top-notch productions.
Established by Mashupe Phala, LadiMash is an independent production company with the aim of commercialising the arts, especially theatre.
The company has produced shows such as Makarapa, My Love My Sin, Born In Vain and Motlhako, which have been exhibited at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
LadiMash’s flagship invention thus far has been 2LATE, a play that was written and directed by Phala, who is the company’s artistic manager.
“The company aims to do away with funder-dependency within the arts sector by encouraging the production of top-notch, cutting edge productions that will compel the audience to buy tickets and visit the theatre,” says Phala.
Phala is among disgruntled artists in the province who say the provincial administration has turned a blind eye on them.
“We have tried to engage the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, but they just ignore us. We have often invited the MEC and the head of department, but none of them attended. This is disappointing and discouraging for artists.”
Spokesperson for the department, Malesela Ramaoka, said he knew nothing about LadiMash, but promised to engage them should formal arrangements be made.
