A stage big enough for an Idol

The Idols South Africa stage has been set, and Limpopo-born Mmatema Moremi (23) has been shining on it

POLOKWANE – The Idols South Africa stage has been set, and Limpopo-born Mmatema Moremi (23) has been shining on it.

Moremi grew up in a small village called Moletlane near Zebediela. She studied language practice at the Tshwane University of Technology, where she obtained a Bachelor of Technology.

She says she has had a passion for singing from an early age.

“I have always wanted to be a singer and a performer. My one dream was to see myself on a stage singing, so I saw Idols as the ideal platform for this and I just had to do it. This was the third time I tried out for Idols,” she explains.

She has a huge following on both her personal, Mmatema Moremi and official Idols, Idols SA Mmatema Moremi social media accounts.

“The Idols experience has been great so far. I am enjoying every moment of it. It is what I have always wanted: wake up, sing, sing and sing. I enjoy it but it is hectic; there is a lot of hard work behind everything,” she adds.

She also admits that being in a singing competition comes with a lot of pressure. “Being on Idols on its own is a lot of pressure. I depend on God to help me and people to vote for me. I work very hard to try to make the people who support me proud,” she says.

Being in the public eye can mean that people know a lot about an individual. Asked what she thinks most people may not know about her, she has this to say: “Wow, there is a lot people do not know about me. My namesake, Mmatema, is a God-fearing worship leader.”

She believes she can win Idols. “My message to others who want to follow in my footsteps is what I believe is working for me also and that is not to give up on what you believe in and want to do. I have entered Idols three times because I have a dream. Most importantly, believe in yourself and don’t sit back and wait to be praised. Do not be afraid to take a risk,” she adds.

“The main reason I entered Idols was to win. I will do my level best but it’s my great supporters who can put me there. I am still building a brand so I believe my calling is not based only in music. I am thinking of spreading my wings in the entertainment industry,” she concludes.
