LIMPOPO – Police launched an investigation following the recent discovery of a baby girl estimated between four and six days old in an open field in Groblersdal.
According to police a passerby discovered the abandoned baby lying inside a piece of polystyrene cover exposed to scorching heat at about 17:30 along Rietbok Street.
“The passerby alerted members of the Groblersdal Neighbourhood Watch who then called the police. The baby, who we suspect was between four and six days old, was transported to the Groblersdal Hospital,” added Const Stanely Magaela, Groblersdal police spokesperson.
Kobus Hieldebrand, head of the Groblersdal Neighbourhood Watch, said the baby had no injuries and showed no signs of dehydration after they conducted checks on her.
“We suspected she was given birth to at a hospital because her umbilical cord showed to have been professionally removed. She even had a clean nappy and wearing apparel,” added Hieldebrand.
The baby was reported to be doing well at the Groblersdal Hospital where she was taken for further medical checks.
Police said the baby will be taken to a place of safety after social workers made an assessment on her case.
We are still searching for the mother of the baby in connection with a case of child abandonment,” added Magaela.
