POLOKWANE – “We are committed to prevent and stop any and all crime,” said Polokwane police station commander, Brig Sam Mokgonyana to Review after the police arrested two burglars on Tuesday.
The two burglars were caught in the act of burgling a house in Oos Street thanks to the quick reaction from an off-duty police officer.
The off-duty police offer said the first time he heard his neighbour’s house alarm go off he went to invesitgate, but found nothing amiss.
When the alarm went off a second time, he looked over the wall and noticed that the burglarproofing of one of the bedroom windows had been cut and bent open.
He immediately contacted the police who were on duty.
They arrived within minutes and found one man packing items in bags in the house and another waiting at the open window for the bags.
As the police were trying to apprehend the man inside the house, the other man made his escape…he was later traced to the ceiling access panel where he was hiding in the ceiling said the off-duty officer.
Damage amounts to thousands, says homeowners
According to the homeowners, Johan Steyn and his wife, Annatjie, the damage sustained through the botched burglary will cost some R20 000.
“We are extremely grateful to the police for their swift action and response while the security company took some time to get here.
“Even though we were burgled and suffered damage, by the police taking action so quickly, we feel much safer,” Annatjie said.
Polokwane police officers committed to stop crime in the city
“We are here to let the robbers, thieves, rapists and other criminals know that the police will not leave any stone unturned to stop crime in the city.
“We are here to serve and protect and we do so fearlessly and selflessly,” Mokgonyana pledged.
