LIMPOPO – A total of 5 000 waste recycling bins were recently distributed to the residents of Mokopane by the Mogalakwena Municipality Mayor, Parks Sebatjane, Community Service Chairperson, Mmaphuti Senoamadi, and councilors.
Sebatjane and the councillors distributed 2 500 recyling bins in ward 31 and another 2 500 in ward 32.
According to a media statement by die Mogalakwena Municipality, Sebatjane said: “The increase in the population leads to an increase in waste and it is our responsibility to manage it. When waste is sorted through recycling, we can reduce the amount that ends up in the landfill.
“Through this campaign we encourage residents to ensure that Mokopane is a clean and green town.”
Mayor Sebatjane further said: “We have only two dumping sites that are approved by the municipality, one in Mokopane and another in Rebone. It has been brought to our attention that there are certain waste materials which are not supposed to be taken to the landfill because they do not decompose.
“The goal of the rubbish bins we have supplied today are to collect recyclable waste such as plastic to ensure the materials and substances taken to the dumping sites can decompose easily.
“In many towns, sorting is not done, and the waste (paper, food, diapers, glass) is mixed up and dumped.
“This is a problem as glass and plastic takes thousands of years to decompose and as a result the landfills soon become full, smelly and unsafe for the environment.
“Proper waste management is not cheap, but it is a subject that should be discussed and we should all get involved. If this matter is not attended to properly and not given the necessary attention, it can be catastrophic to our health and the environment,” Sebatjane strongly concluded.
