LIMPOPO – The Xibelani Music Project, an initiative created to empower women in the arts, was recently launched in Giyani.
The project, a part of Talent Development Institute NPC, will focus particularly on women who are unemployed with the aim to uplift them and promoting the Xitsonga music culture.
Women in the arts will be granted the opportunity to showcase their talent, market themselves, earn recognition from their talent, and work towards making cultural talent sustainable.
“Xitsonga music and dance is a great way for Xitsonga people to express pride in their cultural heritage,” said Kenny Shibambu, one of the directors and also the founder of Limpopo’s gospel choir, Go Explo. Shibambu also added his belief that the Xitsonga music culture and dance is unique and suitable for any occasion or gathering and the dance is enjoyable to not only the dancers, but to anyone watching as well.
Shibambu, who is also the founder of Limpopo’s gospel choir, Go Explo, invited the community to the Xibelani Music Festival which will be held on 29 December at Giyani’s Community Hall.
The festival will feature seasoned musicians and performers across all genres of Xitsonga music. The artists include Dr Thomas Chauke, Penny Penny, Sunglen, Joe Shirimani, and Xitsonga gospel musician, Patience Ntuli. The launch was also an excellent opportunity for the community to interact closely with some of the festival’s featured artists who were in attendance.
