Festive season message from MEC Mokaba-Phukwana
Upholding the provincial vision of ensuring a safe and secure province, I will deploy over 1 200 traffic officers on all major Limpopo roads for 24 hours for the festive season.
December is that time of the year when our people from all walks of life will be travelling to various destinations to celebrate the festivities of this month with their loved ones, after taking long and deserved breaks from work.
From past experiences, we have learned this is also the month in which there is a high increase in the number of road accidents compared to any other period of the year.
It is during periods like this when most people get so excited they disobey the rules of the road and this leads to deaths and injuries caused by preventable road accidents.
Upholding the provincial vision of ensuring a safe and secure province, I will deploy over 1 200 traffic officers on all major Limpopo roads for 24 hours for the festive season.
As we begin with our Christmas and New Year festivities, the province is expecting heavy traffic flow.
I call upon every road user, pedestrians and motorists, to be considerate towards other road users by complying with the rules of the road.
Traffic officers will be monitoring our roads from Maubane to Beit Bridge, particularly traffic flow on the N1.
The department will also deploy traffic officials on the R71 from Polokwane via Moria entrance to Mopani, on R37 from Polokwane via Maja Cross to Burgersfort, on R101, R36, R81, R521 and the Gilead road via Matlala to Groblersbrug on our border with Botswana.
Traffic officers will be monitoring traffic flow, conducting point duty, monitoring stray animals and pedestrians.
I further call on all road users to obey all the rules of the road, exercise patience, refrain from speeding, refrain from drinking and driving, take a rest when feeling tired and make sure their vehicles are roadworthy.
I also urge law enforcement officers to show no mercy to traffic law violators.
We will also strengthen our road safety campaign. Government welcomes partnerships that will assist in encouraging good behaviour on the roads and ensure the people of Limpopo feel and are safe on our roads.
Together we will move South Africa forward.
