LIMPOPO – Tendani Mathaga, who is well-known by his fans as Prifix has already made his mark in the hip hop music industry.
The 22-year-old hails from Mapate village outside Thohoyandou and grew up without recognising his God-given talent. He completed primary school at Mapate Primary School and later matriculated at Lwamondo High School.
He is currently studying language practise at Tshwane University of Technology and encourages others to take their educations seriously.
“I started writing songs at the age of 17 years and ended up releasing my first solo mix tape called The Book of Prifix. The release of this mix tape made me well known, and I ended up working in various places with people from different recording labels. As a result of being a solo musician with no one to call my manager, my musical journey became a very difficult mountain to climb until I met well-known Ven-rap musician, Lutendo Challo Ba Rautshahalo, and another talented Ven-rap musician, Phalanndwa Output Warren.
“We formed the group, Mapcity, a name derived from the word Mapate, which is the name of the place where we were born and raised. We made a lot of noise around Vhembe where we released many hit singles, most of which were played on air by different local radio stations,” Mathaga said.
“Even though I had by then made a connection with the owners of different recording labels, my request to be signed up under these labels were rejected without any real reasons. Regardless, I still worked very hard until my dream became a reality when I signed up under Mos-Bee Records owned by Phalanndwa Mpfariseni Goodman,” he explained.
He told Express that the name Prifix became more popular after he was introduced to Team Khachamedza, namely Lavhutanu Lido Swika, Freddy Magoda, Hulisani Mavhandu, Mpho Bisto Nelwamondo and Dakalo Sky-Diver Mavhungu.
“I am what I am because of the support I get from them. Last year I released my first banging album called Born and Raised under Mos-Bee Records, which is banging in the whole of Vhembe now. The tracks on the album include Vhutshilo ho Shanduka, No Love, Never Give Up, Funanani, Nwananga Muvhuya, African Lady, Mpfareleni and Rudzani,” he said.
“Not making it today doesn’t mean you won’t make it in the future, show the world that you can still make it. For someone to become good at what they do, they need an education to develop themselves. It is the yardstick for success,” he concluded.
