POLOKWANE – With various complaints about the illegal dumping of refuse last year, the Polokwane Municipality has decided to be proactive and prevent people from polluting public places such as the Flora Park dam, instead of having to deal with the rubbish on a weekly basis.

In the past people would come to the park and dump their household trash there as well as in the reeds surrounding the dam where the refuse is hidden from sight, causing major pollution.

Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said the municipality removed the reeds in the first week of December as part of maintenance to the park.

She said the removal was decided on after illegal dumping continued around the dam.

“The reeds were removed to allow for improved waste removal in the water and a cleaner environment for the fish and bird species there. There is now improved visibility of the entire park and that aids the required law enforcement in the area,” Chuene said.

During 2015 there were several complaints on the state of the dam and the park’s safety as the reeds were used as a hiding place for criminals.

Residents were also warned by the police to avoid the area for their own safety.
